My company has what they consider a brilliant way to motivate employees-They put a poster up with everyones name on it iINCLUDING the bosses-Everyone is supposed to run back and put a card on the poster anytime someone does something you think is nice.Every 3 months, the boss gets to pick who gets a shiny pin and gift certificate based on HIS opinion who should get it.These cards and bonuses aren't based on anything verifiable, measurable,or logical.Just opinion. The bosses think its dumb, the employeese think its dumb, embarassing, childish(thats the opinions that aren't too vulgar to print)So no one plays along-so now the big executives are forcing the bosses to give out cards-and forcing them to put their names on "so the employees can show their appreciation to the boss"So now everyone is getting mad if someone got a card and they didn't.The bosses are giving awards to people for 'buying them breakfast'-meantime they only let certain people get them breakfast, lunch and since when should i have to get my bosses food?My boss gave a card to someone 'for making it fun here-meantime everyone else is picking up the slack while this employee follows the boss around having fun-The sad thing is no one wants to do this but the higher ups force the bosses to do it-not based on actually doing anything just an embarassing lets see who likes who contest-and can you imagine what your boss does to you if you don't give him cards??? I'm done ranting-doesnt change the hateful embarassing atmosphere the company created but maybe someone else out there can sympathize. Why do employers want to turn people against each other?

They have just found an ingenious way to cut back expenses on the employee of the month program. now its the employee of the quarter, but everyone is too blinded by their outrage with the way the system works to realize theyre getting 4x less ham/plaques per year.

You want to talk turning workers against each other? Where I work, they had a huge meeting with about 200 people from one work unit (I work for a massive company), where the head guy was taking (pre-prepared) questions from the employees. The question "How do I get a promotion?" came up, because of course promotions are quite rare.

His response was "Don't think you're not in competition with the person sitting next to you for a promotion!". I was floored, as was everyone I talked to about it.

Way to build teamwork, right?
