And commercial commercials in general...

OK, It has come to annoy me when I see a commercial on television, which, is advertising, a commercial. "Tune in on Fox during the season premier of <Insert Whatever Overly Dramatic Fox Action Series> to see the exclusive world premier of the trailer for this upcoming movie.

This week the commercials have focused on Super Bowl commercials. Miller light has an entire add campaign regarding their upcoming ad campaign for the Super Bowl. People know that the Super Bowl is going to have a fresh batch of stupid/funny/sensor irritating/obscenely expensive adverts. People do not need to be told that they need to look out for commercials.

Does anyone else find it dumb to advertise advertisements, to tell you about an upcoming add? The first one I recall was for when the first Dodge Neon came out. For 2 months it seemed before the Superbowl, more than a decade ago, with nothing more than "Hi" and some stupid annoying sound effect, and an indication that you would get to finally see the latest piece of crap that dodge was putting out if you watched the Superbowl commercials.

If you try to build anticipation for a product, and then it is ultimately a let down, this is not going to help your situation. And the hundreds of millions you paid to advertise on the Superbowl, and the hundreds of millions you spend on advertising your Superbowl add, could have been spent on, gee I dunno, maybe improving your product or company?

Another point.. Why do companies need to waste so much money on ads. Do they really think people who don't drink miller light are going to see a miller light add and go "say.. you know.. why don't I try a miller light next time. It seems that this GIANT MEGA-CORP really feels for me, the regular working blue-through-white collar, lawn mowing, phone bill paying, car driving, American, Joe."

WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE WARNED.
WARNING: DO NOT BE ALARMED
ADVERT: Stay tuned for the new Krelm Toothpast commercial, up next!

This brings to mind the commercials with Charles Barkley that have been airing over the past week or so. He's sitting in a chair, seemingly reciting a poem as he writes it, and the commercial ends with, "To Be Continued 2-7-2010".

I honestly have NO idea what the commercial is for, mind you, and I don't care even a little. I don't even care enough to Google it to find out. That's genius marketing, right there.

Many moons ago on Seinfeld, talking about stuffed crust pizza, Elaine said something like, "It'll be years before they find another place to hide more cheese on a pizza." Feels like previews for commercials are kinda like the cheese in stuffed crust pizza -- which makes me wonder where they're gonna try to squeeze them in next...
