I’ll be the first to admit that I’m terrible at parallel parking. Living in a pretty suburban area, I don’t often have to parallel park. I think the last time I had to was when I drove to QXTs, probably 2 years ago. I was struggling so much that a homeless guy decided to help. He stood in the middle of the street, giving me hand signals and guidance until I was finally in the spot. (I was so grateful that I gave him all the change in my car when I got out.)

At work, like in most places in suburban New Jersey, we have parking lots with lined spaces. Even though the spaces are generously-sized, every day I see cars that are parked all the way over to one side – and sometimes so far over that they’re creeping into the next spot.

We have a lot of people in my office that drive vehicles that are way too big for them. Seems to me they can’t even see the ground when they’re parking. That aside (because ranting about too-big vehicles is another post entirely), I would hope that when they got out of their giant SUVs, they’d look to see if they were space-hogging. They don’t, though. They never do. It’s the same people over and over again. And I end up parking in ¾ of a spot day after day.

Personally, when I get out of my car, I look to see if I’m crooked or over the line. We have a limited number of spots in the lot I park in, so I want to make sure I’m not forcing anyone to park even further away from the door – especially in lousy weather. That’s just common courtesy, as far as I’m concerned.

Oh yeah… common courtesy doesn’t really exist anymore, right?

So where I work they have fortunately more than enough parking, in a garage, for free. The bad part is that people can sometimes take advantage of it like you'd mentioned.

You're right, a lot of the time it's people with cars too big for their britches, but strangely enough I see people in tiny cars parking over the lines! Just recently they've had the security guards out wandering the lot writing "tickets", but they seem to be targeting people who are BARELY touching a line (because their space abuts to a wall or something), whereas right down the way there's a car sticking out halfway into the lane!

Be careful what you ask for, half the time it comes out wrong :P
