OK, So they've given us this line for the past... what is it? 20 years or so, and everyone knows it, right? They obviously mean to avoid illicit or 'recreational' drugs when they say that, but lately I've noticed something.
I'm not the kind of person to try everything that comes across my path, but I know a few things, including the REAL dangers of recreational drugs (which can be severe in many cases, but tend to be MUCH less scary than the propaganda machine would have you believe). This in combination with all the commercials for respected, trusted prescription drugs that have 2-minute long speedtalk side-effect warnings very frequently including death and even scarier things have me thinking... What drugs should we REALLY be saying no to?
We all know the stories about Chantix's extreme side effects that have resulted in a few people dying from homicide. The drug helps you stop smoking by blocking uptake from the pleasure recptors. This pretty much works on ALL pleasure... You can see how certain people might be messed up by that, but this is an extreme example.
There's also the anti-depressant drugs. They have a laundry list of side effects that include from psychological effects such as appetite for food OR sex, physiological effects such as joint problems or liver/heart/kidney/etc, up to and including death. At this point you have to consider the side effects of illicit drugs that people might take for the same effect, of dealing with depression.
It's true, the hard drugs such as Cocaine or Heroin can take over your life, but there are a large collection of others that, all things considered, might have less severe side effects on you, and still provide relief for your symptoms.
Granted the problem with this is dosing. With officially sanctioned prescription drugs, you have a learned professional who knows (you hope) what they're doing. With recreational drugs, you have no such saftey, and I'd reckon many problems encountered with them are due to that, or the other big problem of quality control. This really only exists within corporate-produced drugs. On top of all of this, the legality issue is not to be ignored.
What's the right way to go? Put yourself in harms way with drugs that were hastily put out for a profit, or others designed to make you feel good, but have no guarantee whether you're going to get what you bargained for?

Drugs are bad.
I was just reading an article this morning in Scientific American Mind ( July 2009 ) about the ADHD drugs that people are gobbling up. Prescription use for the "disorder" as well as recreational use for performance boosting is rising alarmingly.
The article discussed the unknown damage these drugs cause in the short and long term. It said that one drug, "methylphenidate has a chemical structure similar to that of cocaine and acts on the brain in much the same way".
A few studies had shown visible brain damage in monkeys that were given the equivalent ( per body mass ) regimen of Adderall. In rats, they found all the same long term disorders that recovering and active coke users would have. Rats showed apathy, depression, decreased drive, decreased pleasure. Yes they have all sorts of neat ways to tell if a rat is depressed, sexually frustrated or even schizophrenic. lol.
Point was , these drugs are shown to absolutely cause damage, physiologically and psychologically. Say no to drugs.
The doctor writing the article opened up mentioning a mom wanting meds for her child. The child on meds was dulled down, nulled out, average, not playful, not active, not social, but could do better at serialized worker drone tasks in a grade school environment. The doctor observed the child after being off the drugs for a month. He was more social, more playful, more childlike. He said the child was fine and was really in g... (show all)
ood shape and did not need to medicate anymore. The mom left the office and did not return.
Whats wrong with a walk or a jog and a cup of coffee to clear your mind?
When I was a kid I ran around like an escaped lunatic all day happy as a clam giggling and playing. Doctors had advised my Mom that I should be put on something to calm me down. Because you know all that innocent bliss and laughter is BAD FOR PRODUCTIVITY. Thank God my Mom had read enough and educated herself about so many aspects of nutrition, behavior and lazy moms to know to say no. I think I turned out fine.
Quoted Shoutback:There's also the anti-depressant drugs. They have a laundry list of side effects that include from psychological effects such as appetite for food OR sex, physiological effects such as joint problems or liver/heart/kidney/etc, up to and including death.
Last night, I read an article detailing new findings about anti-depressants from a study by researchers at University of PA. Guess what it said? THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING! From the article: "Mild, moderate and even some cases of severe depression might be better treated with alternatives to antidepressant drugs, which do not help patients much more than an inactive placebo."
The only patients that even slightly benefit are those with EXTREME severe depression. The article goes on to say that 27 million Americans are on anti-depressants. 27 MILLION! And my favorite part of the article? "More than 164 million prescriptions for antidepressants were written in 2008, totaling nearly $10 billion in U.S. sales, according to IMS Health. Global sales were twice that."
Unfreakingbelievable.
I know there are cases of people who are legitimately, clinically depressed, with chemical imbalances, who need medication. But there are NOT 27 million of them. People are so damn quick to throw pills at problems, and the majority of doctors are no better, prescribing w... (show all)
hatever gets the patient out of their office quickest. God forbid anyone should do anything that takes effort. It's a whole lot simpler to get a prescription than it is to do any kind of self-exploration, or exercise (which is the #1 recommendation for alleviating depression).
When people take meds they don't need, they become zombies.

"Say no to drugs" means do not do anything that would cut in to the profit margin of a special interest group that has paid off your congress man. Drug companies are almost 100% European based old money selling synthesized products, street drugs are almost 100% third world grown or derived from grown products. It's all about monopolies and profits, that's why alcohol one of the most destructive drugs known is sold every where and marijuana use will get you seven years hard time. Caffeine and nicotine are drugs and act on the same brain path ways as coke or smack.
